About Benoni
Benoni, known as the ‘city of lakes’ with no fewer than five lakes, is situated on the East
Rand, Gauteng province in South Africa.
Gold was discovered in 1887 and by the early 1900s Benoni was surrounded by seven of the richest
gold mines in the world. Benoni was for a long time very much a mining town, but in recent
years the focus has changed to industry and services and Benoni is used today as a service
centre for other East Rand towns such as Brakpan, Springs and Nigel.
Benoni has two shopping centres, Lakeside Shopping Mall and Northmead Square, excellent schools
and numerous recreation venues and sporting facilities. Benoni has more than 30 parks with
many walks and nature trails. Willowmoore Park is a provincial and One Day International Cricket
venue. It is believed that Benoni has more horse stables per square kilometre than any other
place in the Southern Hemisphere.
Near to Northmead Square is the Bunny Park which contains hundreds of rabbits and other small
animals. This famous attraction in Rynfield was established in the 1960s and covers an area
of approximately 19 hectares. The Korsman Bird Sanctuary in Benoni is a 60 ha nature reserve
of which 20 are under water. This natural pan is inhabited by about 250 species of birds,
many bats, antelope, reptiles, spiders and butterflies.
The town has attractive and tree-lined suburbs, a strong suburban character and provides a
safe and clean family oriented environment, which therefore makes Benoni properties
a safe bet for the investor.
Benoni is situated in the heart of the East Rand and is only 10 minutes from the OR Tambo
International Airport and 20 minutes from Johannesburg CBD.
